Lakers Overhaul Roster In Free Agency After LeBron James Exit

Staff Report by Staff Report

The Los Angeles Lakers moved quickly to reshape their roster around Luka Dončić once LeBron James informed the team he intended to sign elsewhere for the 2026-27 season. With that clarity and roughly $52MM in projected space, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Los Angeles spent aggressively across the opening days of free agency.

The headline move set the tone, and a wave of signings followed to fill out the rotation around Dončić and Austin Reaves. Here is a roundup of the Lakers’ offseason business.

Lakers Land Walker Kessler

The Lakers acquired center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade, signing him to a four-year, $130MM deal, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Los Angeles sent out unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 plus first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030 to get it done. Finding a starting center to play next to Dončić had been the top item on the Lakers’ offseason list, and Kessler, one of the league’s premier interior finishers and rim protectors, checks that box. The steep draft cost reflects how badly Los Angeles wanted to solve the position.

The Rest of the Lakers’ Moves

  • Sandro Mamukelashvili agreed to a four-year, $52MM deal with a player option on the fourth season, per Charania. The forward-center is viewed as the replacement for Rui Hachimura and a strong frontcourt fit alongside Dončić.
  • Collin Sexton signed a two-year, $19MM contract, per Charania. The scoring guard was a surprise addition who gives the Lakers bench punch and valuable backcourt depth behind Dončić.
  • Quentin Grimes inked a four-year, $60MM deal, according to Charania. The three-and-D wing adds perimeter depth, though the fit drew some skepticism given the Sexton signing.
  • Austin Reaves re-signed on a four-year, $185MM max deal, per ESPN. Retaining Reaves locks in the Lakers’ clear top-two alongside Dončić following the James decision.

With LeBron James gone and a retooled supporting cast in place, the Lakers are betting that added depth and a true starting center can vault them back into contention in a loaded Western Conference.

The new look Lakers:

Luka Doncic
Austin Reaves
Walker Kessler
Sandro Mamukelashvili
Quentin Grimes
Collin Sexton
Jake LaRavia
Deandre Ayton
Jarred Vanderbilt
Bronny James
Cameron Carr
Adou Thiero
Dalton Knecht

Two open roster spots for veteran minimum signings and about $5.5M…
