Andrew Wiggins Expected To Opt In, Remain With Heat

Staff Report by Staff Report

The Miami Heat look set to keep one of their veteran wings for at least one more season. Andrew Wiggins is expected to pick up his $30 million player option for next season rather than negotiate a new contract, according to Brian Windhorst.

Windhorst tempered the report with some hedging, noting the situation could still change before it becomes official. His understanding, though, is that Wiggins will opt in by Monday, and that Miami is not pushing for an extension or a reworked deal at this stage.

The money explains much of the thinking. Exercising the option guarantees Wiggins $30 million, a figure that would be difficult to match on the open market given the current free agency climate. It also shapes Miami’s offseason, with an opt-in projected to leave the Heat roughly $18 million to spend across five roster spots, a tight number for a front office trying to add depth.

Wiggins has until 5 p.m. EST on Monday to make his decision official, so the matter should be settled shortly. An opt-in would remove one of the bigger question marks hanging over Miami’s summer.

Retaining Wiggins gives the Heat continuity on the wing as they weigh limited spending power. His scoring and perimeter defense offer a known commodity, even as the front office works with a narrow budget to fill out the rest of the rotation.

If the decision lands as expected, Miami will enter free agency with its wing rotation largely intact and a clearer sense of the money available for the rest of the roster. The full picture should come into focus once Monday’s deadline passes.

Brian Windhorst expects Andrew Wiggins to opt in his contract for next season:

“I think Andrew Wiggins is going to pick up his option. I don’t think they’re going to do a new deal. Could change, but I think Wiggins, by Monday—maybe by the time this podcast comes out—Andrew… pic.twitter.com/LYpViQANHt
